John B. Pendleton

Recognized as the first practioner of lithography in the U.S., Pendleton learned his technique in France during his trip there in 1824. He founded a lithography business in Boston in 1825, then in New York in 1829, where he trained Nathaniel Currier in the process. He sold the firm to Currier in 1834, then turned his attention to carpentry, founding a planing mill (1835–51).
