Gerald Martin

Age: 55

well-respected reporter for The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. who covered stock car racing for three decades; praised by peers in the media as well as drivers and crews as one of the best ever to cover the NASCAR and Winston Cup circuit; graduated from Bluefield College in West Virginia and worked at newspapers in Martinsville and Roanoke, Va. before joining The N&O in 1969; served as president of the National Motorsports Press Association. He died of complications brought on by pancreatitis.

Died: Raleigh, N.C., January 3, 1999
