Ted Hughes

Edward James Hughes
Age: 68

British poet laureate acclaimed for his powerful, nature-inspired poems. His tempestuous marriage to poet Sylvia Plath, who committed suicide in 1963, contributed to his worldwide renown. In his final work, published earlier this year, Birthday Letters, Hughes finally addressed his stormy relationship with Plath, the brilliant, but unstable American poet who committed suicide in 1963 after Hughes left her for another woman.

Died: Oct. 28, 1998.
