was the voice of the Chicaco Cubs for four decades before being replaced by Harry Caray in 1982; also broadcast the Chicago Bears for 24 years; honored in 1979 at Wrigley Field for his 5,000th broadcast; retired in 1981; inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1983; underwent brain surgery March 3, 1998 to remove a small tumor; of cardiac arrest
