the United States' oldest Olympic track and field gold medalist; at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam he ran the second leg of the 4x400-meter relay, helping the U.S. win and set a world record; carried the Olympic torch in 1996 outside Porterdale, Ga.; won the 100 and 220-yard events at the 1927 NCAA track championships for Michigan State; of congestive heart failure
