founded the New England Patriots in 1959 and was president of the American Football League from 1961-64; moved the Patriots to Schaefer Stadium (now Foxboro Stadium) in 1969; named majority owner in 1975 and remained president until 1992; sued the NFL for $116 million in 1991, claiming its refusal to allow him to sell additional public stock forced him to sell the team at a low price of $84 million; he received an $11.5 million settlement in 1996; of cancer
