pioneer of stock car racing who won 40 career NASCAR races, including Winston Cup titles in 1952 and 1955; set a NASCAR record with 19 poles in 1955; was recognized as one of NASCAR's top 50 drivers by the media early in 1998; retired in 1961 and held various positions with Charlotte Motor Speedway; of liver and throat cancer
