Joseph Sobek

Age: 79

inventor of racquetball; developed the sport while working in a rubber manufacturing plant in Bridgeport, Conn. in 1950; single-handedly promoted the sport and founded the Paddle Rackets Association to generate interest; a group of racquetball players formed an association under the direction of Robert Kendler who headed the U.S. Handball Association in 1968 and the sport took off; Sobek took himself out of the picture shortly after and returned to his work as a tennis professional; of congestive heart failure

Died: Greenwich, Conn., March 27, 1998.
