Shirley Clarke

An independent filmmaker, Clarke compared her work to Off-Broadway productions, offering experimental works that challenged convention. Her film The Connection, a gritty exploration of drug addiction, was banned in New York on grounds of obscenity. Her other films include the Oscar-winning Robert Frost: A Lover's Quarrel and The Cool World.
