The National Medal of Science The National Medal of Science, established by Congress in 1959, is administered by the National Science Foundation. The medal honors the contributions made by outstanding individuals who have significantly advanced knowledge in the following fields: physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and sociology and other behavioral sciences. The 2003 National Medal of Science recipients were awarded their medals by President George W. Bush on March 14, 2005.
