Astor's third husband was Vincent Astor, heir to the real estate fortune of John Jacob Astor. When Vincent Astor died, he left his wife $60 million, in addition to the $60 million he set aside to set up a charitable foundation. Brooke Astor would personally direct what would be known as the Vincent Astor Foundation, contributing millions to New York social programs and institutions. Astor was known for visiting each institution that requested funding from the foundation.
