major league baseball manager who led the Philadelphia Phillies' 1950 Whiz Kids to the franchises first NL pennant in 35 years, earning manager of the year kudos; hired as Phillies manager midway through the 1948 season and served until 1952 then again from 1958–59; quit after his team lost the first game of the 1960 season; long-time minor league outfielder in the NY Yankees' system, never played in majors; Phi Betta Kappa member and had a master's degree from Cornell; after a brief illness
