skipper for two America's Cup winning yachts; defended the Cup successfully aboard the Weartherly, a 65-foot single masted sloop in 1962, winning the fourth race by 26 seconds, the slimmest margin in the event's history; defended the Cup again at the helm of Intrepid in 1967, beating Australian skipper Jock Sturrock for the second time; also served as the U.S. State Dept. chief of protocol under Nixon; of cancer
