respected baseball coach at many levels; coached at Rice University from 1981–91, posting a 338–267 record; coached at two other high schools before forming a special bond with the kids at Cypress Creek High School who watched him battle a form of non-smoking related cancer; as a player at Texas he led the Southwest Conference with a .364 average in 1970; of lung cancer
