New Prime Minister Sparks Fear of Return to Nationalism

In late July 2012, Ivica Dacic, who leads the same socialist party once led by Slobodan Milosevic, was sworn in as prime minister. Dacic also once worked as a spokesman for the Socialists. Dacic and President Nikolic, also a former archnationalist, have both vowed to embrace the European Union and leave nationalism behind. A founder and former leader of the Serbian Progressive Party, President Nikolic defeated incumbent Boris Tadic in May 2012. Tadic was well liked in international circles, especially in Washington and Brussels, but he was accused of corruption in Serbia.
