Meteorite Fragments Injure Hundreds

On February 15, 2013, debris from a meteor hit Siberia. More than 1,000 people were hurt, including 200 children. The injuries mostly came from shattered glass, which happened when the meteor exploded. Russian scientists believed that the 10-ton meteor exploded and created a shock wave when it hit the Earth's atmosphere. They believed the meteor evaporated after it exploded, about 30 miles above the Earth, but small fragments made it to the Earth's surface.

The meteor explosion and fallen fragments destroyed buildings across a vast amount of land. However, most of the injuries happened within the city of Chelyabinsk. Over 900 miles east of Moscow, Chelyabinsk has many factories that build nuclear weapons, but the damage caused no radiation leaks, according to Russian officials.
