Unfaithful| Director: | Adrian Lyne | | Writer: | Alvin Sargent and William Broyles, Jr. | | 20th Century Fox; R; 110 minutes | | Release: | 5/02 | | Cast: | Diane Lane, Richard Gere, Olivier Martinez |
From the director of Fatal Attraction comes Unfaithful, a similarly themed drama about infidelity breaking the smooth surface of married life. Diana Lane stands admirably at the center of the storm as Connie, a not-unhappily married wife and mother who impulsively romances a cosmopolitan bookseller played by Olivier Martinez. Her sturdy husband (Richard Gere) catches on to the deception as the affair escalates out of control. A lean script plays out this marital tragedy. Unfaithful is more restrained than Fatal Attraction (although they deal with the same kind of couples living in the same city, New York), a development that allows for a more sober look at how a couple can become undone.
