Nagykanizsa

Nagykanizsa (no'dyukoni"zho) [key], city (1990 pop. 54,059), SW Hungary. An agricultural market center, its economy relies on grain, livestock, and foodstuff trading. There are oil fields nearby. Founded c.1300 as a fortress, Nagykanizsa was captured by the Turks in 1600. It has a museum, an 18th-century Franciscan church, and the ruins of the old fortress. The city is sometimes called Kanizsa.
