Lek (lek) [key], northern arm of the Rhine River, 40 mi (64 km) long, branching from the Neder Rijn (Lower Rhine), central Netherlands, and flowing W into the Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse) River. It is navigable for its entire length. Rotterdam, the chief city on the river, is connected with the North Sea by the Nieuwe Waterweg (canal).
