Buto

Buto (byOO'tō) [key], ancient city, N Egypt, in the Nile delta. The precise location is uncertain. Capital of Lower Egypt in prehistoric times (before 3100 B.C.), it had a temple dedicated to the serpent goddess Buto. During the Saïte period (663–525 B.C.) it was revived as an important religious center.
