It is a lake port with winter and summer sports facilities and is the site of a well-known summer arts festival. Bregenz has industries that manufacture textiles, electrical goods, and machinery. There is a large hydroelectric plant nearby. Located on a site settled in the Bronze Age, Bregenz was chartered c.1200 and in 1726 became the administrative center of Vorarlberg.
