Bellegarde, Heinrich, Count von

Bellegarde, Heinrich, Count von (hīn'rikh, fun belgärd') [key], 17561845, Austrian soldier and statesman. He fought against the French in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, rising to general of cavalry in 1800. In 1806 he was made field marshal. From 1809 to 1813, Bellegarde was governor-general of Galicia. He commanded (1813–15) Austria's armies in Italy and also served (1814–15) as governor of Lombardy and Venetia. From 1820 to 1825 he was president of the Austrian council of war and minister of state.
