Bakewell, Robert

Bakewell, Robert, 172595, English livestock breeder and agriculturist. He successfully bred livestock for meat rather than appearance, developing new breeds, which included the Leicester sheep and the Dishley, or New Leicestershire, longhorn cattle. He introduced the progeny test for selective breeding and also improved methods of housing stock, cultivating grass, and manuring.
