Arsonval, Arsène d'

Arsonval, Arsène d' (ärsen' därsôNväl') [key], 18511940, French physicist and physician. He worked under Claude Bernard and under C. E. Brown-Séquard (whom he succeeded in 1897 at the Collège de France) and was professor at the Sorbonne from 1894 to 1932. The D'Arsonval galvanometer is named for him. A pioneer in electrotherapy, he studied the medical application of high-frequency currents. He was also involved in the industrial application of electricity.
