Agartala (ugŭr'tulu) [key], city (1991 pop. 157,358), capital of Tripura state, NE India, near the Bangladesh border. A market town for rice, tea, jute, and oilseed, it is the commercial center of the region. There is an airport with connections to Kolkata (Calcutta).
