EncyclopediaÅbenråÅbenrå (ô'bunrô') [key], city (1992 pop. 15,799), capital of Sønderjylland co., S Denmark, at the head of the Åbenrå Fjord. It is a port and the commercial center for a rich agricultural region. The city was chartered in 1335. It was held by Prussia from 1864 to 1920 and was then known as Apenrade.
