Aasiaat (äs'ēät") [key], formerly Egedesminde (ā'gu&thstrok;usmin"u) [key], town (1996 pop. 3,039), Aasiaat dist., W Greenland, at the mouth of Disko Bay. It is the fourth largest town in Greenland. It was founded in 1759 and named for Hans Egede, a Norwegian missionary. A large shrimp-canning factory is there.
