The Cider House Rules| Director: | Lasse Hallstrom | | Writer: | John Irving | | Miramax Films; PG-13; 125 minutes | | Release: | 12/99 | | Cast: | Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Michael Caine, Erykah Badu |
Novelist John Irving adapted his popular book into a screenplay for The Cider House Rules. The result is a sentimental yet solid coming-of-age story revolving around Homer Wells (Toby Maguire). Homer is an orphan, raised and tutored by Dr. Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine), a kindhearted ether-sniffing abortionist in picturesque 1940s New England. Homer strikes out for a jaunt on his own, and ends up working in a nearby apple orchard where his eye falls on Candy (Charlize Theron) and also takes note of the troubled relationship of a black girl and her father. Singer Erykah Badu makes an impressive acting premier as the abused daughter. Homer learns misty lessons about life along the way.
