We knew something was up when one of the most anticipated films of the summer was released without any advance press screenings and very little pre-release publicity by the stars. There's little reason to endure the film aside from seeing Uma Thurman in her black leather catsuit. The film version of the popular British television series is indeed stylish, but style seems to have taken precedence over substance. There's no chemistry between the debonair duo of Thurman's Emma Peel and Fiennes' John Steed. And their afternoon cuppas are clearly more important than stopping August DeWynter (Connery) from wreaking meteorological havoc on London. Fans of The Avengers television series are better served catching reruns of the show.
