After a few roles on television, she got her first leading role in Barry Levinson's Diner (1982), and kept busy in a variety of supporting roles in the 1980s. Her next memorable role came in the star-studded Siesta (1987), followed with a lead part opposite Dennis Quaid in The Big Easy (1987), and a sexy leading lady role opposite Al Pacino in Sea of Love (1989). Other film roles include Switch (1991), This Boy's Life (1993), The Fan (1996), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), and Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999). She was married to Gabriel Byrne (1988–93). her subsequent marriage to business mogul Ron Perelman in 2000 reportedly has ended with Perelman filing for divorce in 2006. She has been nominated for two Golden Globe awards.
