The Question:

How many pennies placed side by side would it take to go around the perimeter of your classroom??

—alan, December 09, 2001

Your Answer:

Well, first that depends on the perimeter of your classroom. The perimeter is the sum of the lengths of all sides.

As for the penny part, according to the US Mint, a penny has a diameter of 0.75 inches. So to find out how many pennies it would take to go around the perimeter, you simply divide the perimeter by 0.75.

Be sure to use consistent units: change the perimeter in feet to inches so you can divide inches by inches.
See the Converting Units FAQ if you need help.
