Withdrawals

Emergency Situations

There may be other reasons you need to withdraw money from your IRA before retirement. Here are situations in which you (or your beneficiary) may access your IRA money without the 10% early withdrawal penalty.

  • A distribution is made to your beneficiary after your death.
  • You become disabled.
  • You arrange to take substantially equal periodic payments (at least annually) over your life or life expectancy, or that of you and your spouse combined.
  • You have medical expenses totaling more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.
  • You are unemployed and have received unemployment compensation for 12 consecutive weeks, and you need the money to buy health insurance.
