Yichang or Ichang (both: ē-chäng) [key], city (1994 est. pop. 428,400), SW Hubei prov., China, a river port on the Chang. It is the western terminus for large oceangoing vessels traveling up the Chang from Shanghai; there goods are transshipped to smaller boats that can negotiate the gorges and rapids of the Chang. The gorges above the city are noted for their scenic beauty. Yichang has industries that produce food, cement, chemicals, paper, and textiles.
