Warrington, borough and unitary authority (2011 pop. 202,228), NW England, on the Mersey River and on the Manchester Ship Canal. Manufactures include wire and other metal products, chemicals, soap, leather goods, and beer. The site was early occupied; the Church of St. Elphin has a Saxon crypt. The grammar school dates from 1526, and there are several half-timbered houses. Warrington academy for religious dissenters (1757–83) included Joseph Priestley among its faculty. Warrington was designated a new town in 1968 and has grown significantly since.
