Rivne

Rivne rĭvˈnə [key], Pol. Równe, Rus. Rovno, city (1990 est. pop. 229,000), capital of Rivne region, W Ukraine, on the Ustya River. It is a rapidly growing road and rail junction and an industrial center producing heavy machinery and electrical and consumer goods. An old Ukrainian settlement, Rivne was first mentioned in 1282 and grew into an important trade center. It passed to Russia in 1793 and to Poland in 1921, reverting to Ukraine in 1939. The city has ruins of a medieval palace.
