ObanOban (ōˈbən) [key], town (1991 pop. 8,000), Argyll and Bute, W Scotland, on the Firth of Lorn. A port and seaside resort, its circular bay makes a fine yacht basin. Highland Games are held there each September. Near the ruins of Dunollie Castle, a 12th-century fortress, is a huge rock called the Dog Stone, to which the Gaelic hero Fingal is said to have chained his giant dog Bran.
