Lota

Lota lōˈtä [key], city (1992 pop. 50,123), S central Chile, a port on the Gulf of Arauco, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean. Founded in the 17th cent., the city grew rapidly after coal was discovered in the region (1837) and is now part of the Greater Concepción conurbation. There are also industries producing copper and bricks. The botanical park on a hill above the city is famous for its landscaping and sea views. The city has suffered significant damage from earthquakes, most recently in 2010.
