Ivrea

Ivrea (ēvrĕˈä) [key], city (1991 pop. 24,704), Piedmont, NW Italy, on the Dora Baltea River. It is a commercial and industrial center, and it is the headquarters of Olivetti, an important Italian company. Manufactures include typewriters, computers, and textiles. A Roman town ( Eporedia ), it was later the capital of a Lombard duchy and then the seat of a marquisate. Berengar II, one of its rulers, was briefly king of Italy (mid-10th cent.). Ivrea passed to the house of Savoy in the 14th cent. The city is dominated by a picturesque castle (14th cent.), which has four red brick towers.
