Heerlen

Heerlen (hārˈlən) [key], city (1994 pop. 95,794), Limburg prov., SE Netherlands. It is an industrial and transportation center. Manufactures include textiles and food products. The city was a major coal-mining center from the late 19th cent. to the early 1970s, when mining operations were closed.
