Fleurus

Fleurus flörüsˈ [key], town, Hainaut prov., S Belgium. It is a coal-mining and manufacturing center; domestic appliances, furniture, and machinery are produced. At Fleurus, Mansfield and Christian of Brunswick defeated (1622) the Spanish in the Thirty Years War, the French under Marshal Luxembourg defeated (1690) the Dutch and their allies in the War of the Grand Alliance, and the French under Jourdan defeated the Austrians in a decisive battle (1794) of the French Revolutionary Wars.
