Cumbernauld

Cumbernauld, town (1991 pop. 47,517), near Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, SW Scotland. Cumbernauld, the 15th of Britain's new towns, was designated in 1955 to alleviate Glasgow's growth problems. Cumbernauld's industries include food processing and the manufacture of adding machines and adhesive products. It was the first new town in which automobile traffic was adequately anticipated and provided for. Wherever possible, vehicular roads were completely separated from pedestrian ways.
