Chorzów

Chorzów (hôˈzhōf) [key], city (1994 est. pop. 131,100), Śląskie prov., S Poland. A rail junction and a center of the Katowice mining and industrial region, it is the site of the Kościuszko Iron and Steel Works. Formerly known as Królewska Huta (Ger. Königshütte ), it passed from Germany to Poland in 1921. After 1945, the German-speaking majority was expelled and replaced by Poles. The city has a huge sports stadium.
