Barcelona (bärˌsəlōˈnə, Catalan bärˌsəlōˈnə, Span. bärˌthālōˈnä) [key], city (1990 pop. 4,738,354), capital of Barcelona prov. and chief city of Catalonia, NE Spain, on the Mediterranean Sea.
