As of the 2020 census, the state's population was: White alone,86.9%; Black alone, 3.4%; Hispanic or Latino, 4.1%; American Indian and Alaska native alone, 5.6%; Asian alone, 1.7%; Two or More Races, 2.3%. Capital, Bismarck. Largest city, Fargo. Statehood, Nov. 2, 1889 (39th state), simultaneously with South Dakota. Highest pt., White Butte, 3,506 ft (1,069 m); lowest pt., Red River, 750 ft (229 m).
