Uruapan

Uruapan (OOrwä'pän) [key], city (1990 pop. 187,623), Michoacán state, W Mexico. An attractive city with gardens and parks, it is in a semitropical, mountainous agricultural region. The city, founded in 1540, is the center of the manufacture of gourd lacquerware by the Tarascans. Local artisans also produce glassware, woodwork, and embroideries. Not far from Uruapan is the volcano Paricutín.
