Sialkot

Sialkot (syäl'kōt) [key], city (1998 pop. 417,597), near the Indian border, Pakistan. It is a rail junction and a major trade and processing center. Manufactures include sporting goods, processed foods, and ceramics. Textile weaving is also important. A fortress built in 1181 by Muhammad of Ghor and the mausoleum of Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion (see Sikhism), are in Sialkot. The city is also the birthplace of the philosopher-poet Muhammad Iqbal.
