Naruhito

Naruhito, 1960–, Japanese emperor (2019–), son of Akihito. He is the first Japanese emperor to have studied abroad, attending Oxford from 1983 to 1985. In 1991 he was officially invested as crown prince, and in 1993 he married Masako Owada, a commoner and former diplomat. They have a daughter. He became emperor when his father in 2019. Upon Naruhito's ascension to the throne the Reiwa (“beautiful harmony”) era was proclaimed.
