Meyerhof, Otto (ôˈtō mĪˈərhōf) [key], 1884–1951, American physiologist, b. Germany, M.D. Heidelberg, 1909. He was professor at the Univ. of Kiel (1912–24) and at the Univ. of Berlin and director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Medical Research at Heidelberg (1929–38). Forced to leave Germany, he became professor of biochemistry at the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1940. He studied cellular oxidation and discovered the transformation of lactic acid in muscles. For this he shared with A. V. Hill the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His works include The Chemical Dynamics of Life Phaenomena (1924).
