García Gutiérrez, Antonio

García Gutiérrez, Antonio äntōˈnyō gärthēˈä go͞otyārˈrĕth [key], 1813?–1884, Spanish romantic playwright. He was a soldier when his best-known play, El trovador, was staged in 1836. This play and his Simón Bocanegra (1843) were adapted by Verdi for the operas Il Trovatore (1852) and Simon Boccanegra (two versions: 1857 and 1881). His last major plays were Venganze catalana (1864) and his masterpiece Juan Lorenzo (1865).
