Campomanes, Pedro Rodríguez de, conde de Campomanes pāˈᵺrō rôᵺrēˈgāth kōnˈdā dā kämpōmäˈnās [key], 1723–1802, Spanish statesman, economist, and author. As president of the council of Castile under Charles III and briefly under Charles IV, he introduced administrative, social, and economic reforms. He wrote on the revival of industry and on the professional education of the working classes. In his most important essays he analyzed many of the laws and ordinances and attempted to trace the influence of Spanish legislation, hoping to revitalize national commerce. He was of the main political figures of the Spanish Enlightenment.
